January 2005 Newsletter

The news from PLAYTIME Inc. January 2005 Friends, From our staff to yours, we wish you a very successful and prosperous 2005! New Year, New Team! -- A Insider’s View of The Business of Team Building -- by John Chen, The Big Kid, PLAYTIME Inc. As I reflect on 2004, I’m excited at how far we’ve come. In 2004, we ran 63 events in awesome locations such as Seattle, San Diego, San Francisco, Miami, Washington DC’s National Mall, Barcelona, Shanghai and Taiwan!!! During those 63 events, we worked with 2,500+ clients in sharing our team building, team-to-team building and leadership insights in one of the most popular and dynamic team building events, geoteaming, GPS Powered Team Building! And for those who like to track the bottom line, we increased revenue by 117%! Wow, what a year! Normally when I start off the year, I like to inspire people to set big, hairy audacious goals (BHAG). This year, I’d like to give you an insider’s view of my BHAG known as PLAYTIME Inc. It’s been quite a ride and I’ve learned a lot about the business of Team Building and I’d like to share what I know with you. There will be a few small snippets in this newsletter, if you’d like to know more, I invite you to subscribe to my blog at http://playtimeinc.typepad.com. I quite often post new observations there first before they hit my newsletter. Check out what’s in this month’s issue! * TEAM TIP: Planning your next team building event by Andrew Gustafson, PLAYTIME Inc.’s latest GeoRep! * LEADERSHIP LESSON: Sherpas as Servant Leaders * HELP PLAYTIME Inc. Make The Fast Company Fast 50! * New Courses, New Clients! Barcelona, Miami, Napa and more!!! * 1/27, 2/24, 3/24, 4/28, 5/19, 6/23 geoteaming Open Programs, All New for 2005 * 2/10 AM & PM: NEW! NW Tactical Team Training, Are You Ready? * 2/25 CARE invites you to PhotoSensitive’s "HIVPositive, AIDS through a new lens" * 3/11 PLAYTIME Inc. to host a Table at the Passages Northwest Fundraiser, WIN a geoteaming event! * 4/10 Turn $5 Into $1 MILLION by participating in the world’s largest online game! TEAM TIP: PLANNING YOUR NEXT TEAM BUILDING EVENT! -- by Andrew Gustafson, PLAYTIME Inc.’s latest GeoRep! Happy 2005 everyone! My name is Andrew, and I am the new GepRep here at PLAYTIME Inc. I come to PLAYTIME with a background in pro sports game operations, major market radio station promotions, and corporate event planning. In other words, 6 months ago I was in your shoes, planning the functional and social events for a 4,000 person company. I remember my biggest struggle when planning a team building event for a department was always finding something that no one had done before. And with a diverse workplace and various individual ability levels, it had to be an event that everyone could participate in. Most importantly, it had to deliver on its primary goals, improving the effectiveness and efficiency of a department. I was judged after the event by my boss on whether the return was worth the investment. A year ago I heard the buzz in the industry about geoteaming, a hot new high tech treasure hunt. After attending an open session to check it out, I contracted John and his PLAYTIME team to deliver a geoteaming program to one of my company’s more dysfunctional departments. Not only did the event meet my goals of improved networking and communication, and enhanced collaboration and cooperation, but it was talked about for months after! They met and interacted with coworkers they had never really seen before that day, they carried those relationships back to the office, they shared pictures and stories, they started working together, and they liked it! Needless to say it made an impact on me as well, and I am grateful to now have the opportunity to present Life Changing Adventures to companies all over the world! So here we are in January, and it is the planning month for your company, and if you are reading this it is probably because you are the go-getter who suggested your company put together a kick butt team building activity in 2005. Everyone agreed it was needed, but no one else volunteered to put it together, leaving it squarely on your shoulders! Congrats! Now you get to take input from a few know-it-alls, hear criticisms from all, and hold your breathe thru the entire event, hoping the team building activity you chose was the right one. Did you know that 90% of the team building events are booked either more than 6 months or less than 6 weeks in advance? Why is that? Well, while everyone agrees that team building is important, making a decision usually gets pushed to the bottom of the meeting agenda each week, and then tabled. There just always seems to be something else that comes up! Until two months out from a conference or retreat! That’s when panic decisions get made! Its quite ironic actually, when everyone ends up arguing over team building activities. So you have a choice, join the ranks of proper planning, or join the panic crew! Trust me, prior planning and booking in advance will massively reduce your stress. I know, I’ve been there! Call us to book your company’s life changing adventure today! (877) 652-0875 To learn more about geoteaming and how it can impact your company in 2005, click here! LEADERSHIP LESSON FROM THE SUMMIT. We here at PLAYTIME Inc. all have a passion for the outdoors and especially for climbing. Indeed, one of our premiere team building events that we host is a 9 month prep course and summit of Mt Rainier in Washington. We have long thought of ourselves as Sherpas, helping our clients summit their team building challenges. This quote from the father of all Sherpas, sums it up profoundly: "You cannot be a good mountaineer, however great your ability, unless you are cheerful and have the spirit of comradeship. Friends are as important as achievement. Another is that teamwork is the one key to success and that selfishness only makes a man small. Still another is that no man, on a mountain or elsewhere, gets more out of anything than he puts into it." -- Tenzing Norgay To learn more about summiting with PLAYTIME Inc. in 2005, click here! Yes, it’s true, I even talked to the owner of Urban Challenge Online, Kevin LaChapelle. Turns out, Urban Challenge is something akin to geoteaming, except only with camera phones. We talked recently about his latest idea and I decided that I wanted to compete. You can too! Read on and see how you can be part of history on your way to a MILLION dollars! This winter, my group is part of the team helping Urban Challenge Online (UCO) stage the biggest game in history and become enshrined in the famed Guinness book of world records. People from all over the world can enter UCO to turn five bucks into a million. Based on the nationally acclaimed adventure racing series Urban Challenge, UCO is played out completely online. You and a friend set out on a race across cyberspace seeking to identify 12 "checkpoints". Checkpoint identities can only be discovered by first solving – via your brains and the internet – 12 fun and clever clues. Be one of the first 10 teams to submit the correct answers to all 12 clues and you win an all-expense paid trip to NYC to compete in the event finals for ONE MILLION DOLLARS! In addition, one team drawn by special lottery will automatically win an all-expense paid trip to NYC to play in the final round- no matter how successful they are in the first round. The sooner you register, the more GOLDEN TICKET lottery chances you get to win the trip. IMPORTANT INFORMATION When you register, please be sure you enter our unique referral code word: “PLAYTIME” (no quotes, just playtime) Enter the code word and you will be entered into a separate drawing for a Special PLAYTIME Inc. You can do it, even if it isn't corporate team building!

Member spotlight: Everything matches up for Julee Wasserman When DinnerGrrls.org member Julee Wasserman founded her own outdoor tours company, she knew it would take a lot of hard work to attract and retain corporate clients for teambuilding events. But she didn’t know that her initial idea would also evolve into a totally new area: a unique and – judging from a 300-person membership, a full calendar of monthly events, and even several wedding invitations – very successful events service for singles. Julee founded Julee’s Gorge Tours in 1999 after working at a Columbia Gorge nonprofit. “I just decided I wanted to be my own boss,” she says. Her goal was to boost tourism in the Gorge by organizing recreational teambuilding exercises for Portland-area corporations like Nike and Tektronix. But as the economy began to dip in 2001, Julee saw a corresponding slump in her business. “Corporations didn’t have that much money in their budgets to do teambuilding,” Julee says. “I realized that I couldn’t make a living just doing corporate events, so I decided to branch out into recreational singles events, as well.” Julee started organizing some informal events and found that demand was high. By fall 2003, she had started a full-fledged outdoor social club for singles. Today the club holds everything from board-game nights and happy hours, to rafting trips and snow-shoeing expeditions. Julee’s efforts have matched up many Portland-area singles and resulted in at least three weddings so far. Even Julee has gotten in on the action—she met her current boyfriend at a “speed dating for outdoor enthusiasts” event several months ago. Julee sums up her advice for other women entrepreneurs in one word: patience. “The worst thing is that people get too financially stressed and give up,” she says. “You’ve got to be patient and give it a few years. It can be three years – sometimes five – before you start to see profits.” Julee has attended several Portland-area DinnerGrrls.org events over the past year, including a potluck that she hosted at her home. “I love the female energy and trying out new restaurants,” she says. “I just think it’s fun.” Given that she spends most of her time organizing outings for others, it’s only fitting that she adds, “I also love it because it’s an event that I don’t plan!” For more information on Julee’s Gorge Tours and the Singles Outdoor Social Club, see http://www.gorgetours.com.

This is care of my good friend and master networker, Mary Bigelow.  This is DRAMATIC, check it out.

If you're interested in making a difference, my good friend, Thomas Reynolds, and his co-worker Heidi at CARE.ORG are doing a great fundraiser with the Seattle Sonics.  http://www.care.org/sonics  I'm going to the Sonics vs. Miami game tonight and volunteered to get donations.  CARE will match up to $50,000, making a total gift of $100,000 of relief aid.  Thomas will fly over in Feb to visit the areas, from his viewpoint he says every penny will definitely make a difference here.  Wish me luck as I have to ask Wally Walker and Howard Shultz for money tonight!  ;-)

Here's my 2004 Entry with all the great comments we got, Thanks!

PlayTime Inc. - Creating Life-Changing Adventures!

John Chen
CEO & The Big Kid, PlayTime Inc.
Seattle - WA US

Tell us what you do and the specific challenge you faced.
In 1997 I envisioned a training company that used technology and adventure to infuse powerful team and leadership skills. In 1999, I left Microsoft to pursue this company full-time. I created The Journey, a nine-month program that literally peaks on 14,410 ft. Mt. Rainier. It was a powerful program, but reached a very thin target audience, the challenge was to create a more accessible, yet powerful experience.

What was your moment of truth?
An advisor forwarded an email about the emerging sport of Geocaching, a high-tech treasure hunt with GPS receivers. I broke out my GPS receiver and found my first "Geocache". Then we contacted the website owners who were here in Seattle, WA and found they had 4 team building requests and no resources to take care of them. We formed an immediate partnership and created GeoTeaming, GPS Powered Team Building!

What were the results?
When we started our partnership, we were on the front page of Geocaching.com, getting exposed to 2 million views/day. Now we're exposed to over 20 millions views/day and growing! Over the past 2 years, we've completed over 150 events for over 3,000 people and we're continuing to grow! We receive a tremendous number of leads/month, we've had partnerships form as people have contacted us, we've traveled the world creating events, have won 2 awards (The PSBJ Top 40 Entrepreneur Under 40 and The BBB Innovative Business Practice Awards!) and get to inspire teams around the world.

What's your parting tip?
Know your values, pursue your dreams and you'll never know what opportunities will show up because you're there!

Comments that readers have made about this submission:

What a cool product and story! And I've seen them on the geocaching.com website!

We had a terrific time when we used Play Time Inc to organize a geocaching event for us. It was amazing to find such a fun way to have my whole team figure out how to work to achieve individual goals and also bargain with each other to achieve a group goal. We learned a lot from the event. I frequently think back to the learnings from the day in my every day work as a manager at Microsoft.
Gayna Williams - Seattle, WA, USA

Our company has had first hand experience with Playtime Inc. John and his team started by providing training to our teens. They emerged as totally different people--confident, inspired, and ready for the world. We then had Playtime Inc. lead our staff through a four hour team building session. It was a lot of fun, we learned a lot about each other, and the new staff members got a chance to brag that their team found the most items in the geoteaming exercise. This is a unique company with a big heart and a true desire to inspire us all to do our best. Go John!
Trish Millines Dziko - Seattle, WA

I work for an event management company and we used the services of Play Time for a team buidling day in San Francisco. By the end of the day everyone had had such a great time they wanted to go back out into the streets of San Francisco to find the few caches they hadn't found. This concept is so different than any other team building, it's not cheesy it uses the mind and body.
Tracy Barnard - San Francisco, CA USA

John and PlayTime Inc have hit the nail on the head. Extreme teambuilding experiences lead to better workplace relationships which leads to greater innovation and productivity. What's not to like about that??
James Chen - San Francisco, CA USA

There is something so organic in the learning with fun and technology that Playtime brings. I have participated in many experiential trainings and "Herding Cats", a team building workshop, was the first time I participated in "ropes" type challenges that didn't scare me! In fact it was the best "fun" learning I have had! If you don't know Playtime--you should.
Mary Bigelow - Seattle, WA, USA

Playtime's John chen came and did a two hour training session on team building for 70 nonprofits during an intense 4 day conference. The nonprofits never get to experience this type of training. They loved it and were in awe. And after seeing some of the activities in progress it becomes so clear why we do fall short of our goals but the activities show us how much we are capable of through team building.
Curtis Brown, Brandinthebox.com - Washington

I love to work with John Chen and his team at Playtime Inc.. As a DMC in the Seatte area, teambuilding programs are part of the services we offer and John is always our first choice to offer our clients. Normally I am not in operations, but I love to run the teambuilding events with John, because I learn so much for myself. We have 15 offices nationwide and all of them offer teambuilding with Playtime Inc. - Way to go John!

I experienced John's "services" first hand just a few weeks ago. I believe for any company to excell, all employees need to feel valued and empowered to make a difference. John Chen's company creates an arena for this to occur for every player in his events. In a single day, John will provide immediate tangible impact for all to see. Title's and positions of authority dissappear and new strengths emerge in people that you may never expect. It's an experience that can bring new confidences, better communication and lasting change! If I'm comparing Playtime Inc. to other companies that have proven themselves, I feel John's influence to affect the success of others - not just himself puts him head and shoulders above the rest! He has my vote, hands down!
